Sex Therapy
Samantha Jayne Counselling integrates Psychosexual Counselling into their services; understanding the ways relational trauma and exposure to chronic stress, fatigue and burnout can impact our relationships and our understanding of intimacy and pleasure.
Sex Therapy offers the opportunity for holistic, pleasure-centred, wrap-around care through accessing specialised support and education to help you connect with your sexual self.
As a trained Psychosexual Therapist, Samantha is passionate about providing you with a safe, judgement-free space to explore and reconnect with their sexual selves. Working with various forms of complex and relational trauma, Samantha has a unique understanding of how sexual trauma, domestic violence, experiences in childhood and general exposure to recurring and chronic stress can fundamentally shape how you experience pleasure, safety, and connection with yourself and others.
This work acknowledges how relational experiences, nervous system responses, and chronic stress can shape how you experience your body, pleasure, and connection with others and will be best suited for clients looking to address issues including:
Sex and anxiety
Sex and intimacy after trauma
Rediscovering your sensual self
Issues relating to desire (wanting it too often it’s interrupting life/not enough and it’s missing from life)
Issues relating to arousal (i.e. the body is doing what you want or think it should be doing)
Orgasm Problems
Painful Sex
Wanting to improve sex and intimacy – particularly as it may relate to life challenges
Sex education (think the kind you wish you had growing up!)
Pornography use
There are many aspects of our lives that can relate to and intersect with our sexual selves that it is common for other topics to be incorporated into your goals for sex therapy such as body image, self-esteem and self-identity. Sex therapy works to provide clients with the reassurance and opportunity to explore these topics and how they affect your understanding of sexuality and broader identity.
Sex and sexuality do not exist as being separate from other parts of the human experience; in fact they are integral to it.
What does the process look like?
During the first appointment we will explore your immediate concerns and complete a biopsychosocial assessment on the issue being addressed. From here we will collaborate to develop a treatment plan that meets you where you’re at and will support you with information and strategies to practice between sessions. As we progress, we will continue to review and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure it is continuing to suit your needs.
Where appropriate, you may be recommended a referral to external healthcare specialists such as pelvic floor physios or your GP. This will be discussed further in session as to whether it is needed.
What sex-therapy is NOT:
Sex-Therapy does not involve or facilitate physical touch as part of any treatment approach or intervention. It is a virtual, talk-based intervention which commonly draws upon therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Education strategies.
Samantha will not ask to you to show or practically demonstrate the problem being experienced and there will be no physical touch involved.
